Lagos Life vs The Sims

Comparison · 5 October 2026 · 5 minutes

The Sims is the reference point for almost everyone who plays a life simulator, and it should be: it is one of the biggest, oldest and deepest games in the genre. Lagos Life is not trying to be it. It is a smaller, sharper game about one city and one recurring problem — the rent — and the comparison is worth making, because the differences are the whole point.

What they share

A household you control, needs that decay, money you have to earn, a day that runs out before you have done everything. If you have played a life sim before, the loop in Lagos Life will feel familiar within a minute. Its six needs — hunger, energy, fun, social, hygiene and bladder — are the same six most simmers already know how to juggle.

Where it goes its own way

The SimsLagos Life
Setting A generic town you build and name Lagos, specifically — Amala Shitta, Quilox, Balogun market, Third Mainland
Money Careers and side hustles 25 careers with five levels each, plus gigs, and a rent that is due every Saturday
Time A day cycle you speed up and pause Minutes are the currency — every action spends them, and the go-slow is real
Getting around Mostly instant, or a loading screen Six ways to move — trek, danfo, keke, okada, cab, car — priced and timed per kilometre
Being seen Nothing you buy is visible to anyone else 38 billboards and 24 lagoon plots you rent, paint and share — other players see them
Other people Gallery sharing and a large mod scene Optional chat, a leaderboard and a shared map, built into the game
Where you play PC, Mac and consoles; a big install The browser, free, with nothing to install — Android and iPhone coming soon

The one mechanic that is really different

In most life sims, money buys things only you can see. In Lagos Life the best thing to buy is attention. Paint one of the 38 billboards over the roads for ₦100,000 a week and put your own emoji and advert on a Lagos road where other players drive past it. Rent a plot on the lagoon for ₦50,000 a week and put your mark on the water. Slots are shared, first come first served, and named on the map — so the board you buy is an advert somebody else actually reads. Work for it, then advertise it.

Where The Sims is still the bigger game

Honesty matters here. The Sims has decades of content, a deep build-and-buy mode, an enormous library of expansions and a mod community nothing smaller can match. If you want to build houses for a weekend, download custom content, or micromanage a large household across generations, it is the better game and it is not close.

Lagos Life is the other thing: a focused sim about one city, one culture and one pressure, that you can open in a browser tab in ten seconds. It is the game for the person who wants to feel Lagos — the danfo that will not wait, the amala at Shitta, NEPA, rent — not to build a suburb.
